Top 5 minerals to use in jewelry design

I have always loved rocks and minerals, and as a bead and jewelry enthusiast, I have used many awesome stone beads in jewelry.

I am happy to introduce Jessica Kane as my guest blogger for this post. Jessica is a professional writer who also shares a love of handmade jewelry. This informative article includes details about 5 particular minerals that are great to use when making jewelry.

5 Minerals that make beautiful jewelry

by Jessica Kane

Though gemstones can make breathtakingly beautiful jewelry, minerals create an intrigue all of their own.

A rainbow of color variations brings uniqueness to a piece of jewelry; and the healing properties of crystals and minerals have been utilized for centuries. In fact, gemstones are merely highly attractive—and pricey—variants of minerals. For example, the precious sapphire is actually composed of the mineral corundum. Both can be used in jewelry, but since sapphire is more spectacular, it is dubbed a ‘gem.’

What many people do not know is that there are many stones that make better friends than diamonds ever will.

Fluorite

1. Fluorite

Fluorite is known as the “Genius Stone” and the “most colorful mineral in the world.”

Loved by mineralogists and metaphysical healers, fluorite is a favorite when it comes to jewelry and spirituality.

No matter the color—blue, green, clear, yellow, pink, mixes—each crystal has the same stable energy. A perfect solid structure makes fluorite luminous; glassy yet soft in luster.

Staring into fluorite is said to bring order to chaos and fine tune concentration. For example, blue fluorite is a calming stone, due to the luminescent blue shade. Rational energy flows from the stone, tidying up a disordered mind and allowing for pursuit of purpose. Since blue fluorite connects to the Throat Chakra, it is said to promote smoother speaking skills.

Blue John fluorite (Derbyshire Spar) is famous for its striking appearance. The unique purplish-blue and creamy yellow hue makes it a decorative stone to wear, while it charges the Third Eye and Crown chakras and encourages adventure and personal growth.

Pyrite
Pyrite, also known as Fool’s Gold

2. Pyrite (Fool’s Gold)

There is nothing foolish about the positive powers of this brass-colored mineral!

The gorgeous metallic gold of pyrite is a stunning addition to rings, bracelets and pendants. In the 1800s, pyrite was a coveted addition to Victorian fashion and used in rosettes, buckles and rings.

Native American tribes value this stone for its magical properties. Pyrite lends strength to spiritual talismans by tapping into the wearer’s latent potential, unleashing a flow of ideas and increasing self-confidence. This stimulation of the Third Eye and Throat Chakras can also strengthen will power. Those suffering from psychosomatic and environmental diseases will find relief when wearing a pyrite amulet.

Quartz

3. Quartz

Probably the most utilized mineral, quartz is also the second most abundant mineral in Earth’s soil.

Since antiquity quartz has been used to make jewelry, used in carvings and even modern technology.

Spiritualists believe that quartz has energy-channeling properties, making these crystals an indispensable tool during meditation and Reiki healing.

The beauty of quartz creates a diamond-like highlight when added to jewelry. Variants of quartz include onyx, jasper, citrine, carnelian, agate and aventurine.

Malachite

4. Malachite

The beautiful green featured in malachite is undoubtedly alluring. The mesmerizing patterns are soothing to the viewer, and there is a healing quality that is said to represent the effects of nature on the human soul.

Malachite is also called a stone of transformation, for it promotes spiritual growth when worn. Much like nature, malachite draws out impurities from the body and cleanses one’s Life Force.

Malachite has been worn for centuries by the Egyptians, ancient Greeks and Romans to ward against the “Evil Eye.”

Deeply associated with the Heart Chakra, the green energies of malachite promote balance. Due to this connection, the stone is often used as a pendant on long chain necklaces. Wide-band bracelets and simplistic brooches are another way to show off malachite’s splendor.

Labradorite

5. Labradorite

Known as “the stone of the Northern Lights.” Inuit folklore states that this stone fell from the Aurora Borealis and emits a mystical glow that separates this world from the next.

A member of the feldspar family, Labradorite comes in a variety of cooler color shades—grays, greens, blues and blacks—intermingled with cyan, coppery red and gold.

The beauty of Labradorite makes it ideal for statement pieces, like chokers and bracelets.

It is believed that Labradorite brings out the best in people and for this reason it is often worn or carried to reduce anti-social or reckless behavior, and to aid in addiction rehabilitation.

Whichever way you decide to wear these visually appealing minerals you will obtain a host of benefits.

Hematite jewelry handmade gifts for members of the press

I signed up to send Hematite Jewelry as my handmade jewelry gifts for members of the Press who attend GBK’s Celebrity Gift Lounge honoring the MTV Movie Awards Nominees and Presenters. This great opportunity is one of the benefits of being a member of The Artisan Group!

The Artisan Group Badge

I just love crystals and stones, so I decided to make pendant necklaces with Hematite Spheres. I ordered all of my jewelry making supplies and when I received the spheres I had to laugh because by themselves they were like little cannon balls!

It took me several days, but once I added some wire and swirls the little “cannon balls” transformed into beautiful Hematite Jewelry.

Where to find pyramid stones and crystals

Lapis Lazuli Pyramid Stones
Lapis Lazuli Pyramid

Years ago I was at an Intergalactic Bead Show and came upon a vendor selling Pyramid stones and crystals. I was smitten!

I have always been fascinated with the Pyramids of Egypt and there was just something “necessary” about having one made of stone.

I bought a small Lapis Lazuli pyramid (featured above) which sits on my desk, and I recently discovered I could collect more of these Pyramid stones at Healing Crystals.

Below are the choices at the top of my list! Click the picture to learn more about each stone.
Pyramid - Golden Tiger Eye Pyramids

Golden Tiger Eye Pyramid – for its ability to attract spiritual energy yet still keep you grounded. This polished stone is just gorgeous, I have never been a huge fan of Tiger Eye, but I think I have changed my mind!
Pyramid - Amethyst Pyramids
Amethyst Pyramid – Purple is one of my favorite colors and the amethyst is a soothing, powerful and protective stone. It is also the stone used for the February birthstone.

Pyramid - Clear Quartz Pyramids

Rose Quartz for Celebrity Moms

I am excited to announce that Rose Quartz stones made into bracelets for 25 Celebrity Moms and 5 members of the Press are on the way to be included with other handmade gifts in The Artisan Group® Mother’s Day Gift Bag.

This was an achievement that I can say was a great experience, and I can only hope that these wonderful Mom’s will love wearing this gift that came from my hands and my heart.

Rose Quartz Bracelets for Celebrity Moms

I decided to participate in this collaborative gift bag to Hollywood Mothers so that I would have experience in a large production, working my way up to other events with The Artisan Group® that require more products.

Mom-Charm-xo
TierraCast Silver Plated Pewter Love Mom Charm

I was inspired to make this bracelet by this little charm that I found and decided to combine that with Rose Quartz because of its loving and nurturing qualities.

Rose Quartz, also known as the Love Stone, is a crystal of unconditional love, It enhances loving qualities such as compassion, tenderness, comforting, nurturing, etc.

I made a “prototype” and sent a photograph off to the organizers for approval, once it was approved I did the math and then ordered all of the beading supplies I would need to complete these 30 bracelets.

Assembly Process

I used an assembly process similar to the one I use when making Rosaries, which worked really well and within a few days I was done! OK, well maybe it took a week.

The hardest thing to do was get a really good photo for the Gift Guide, I must have taken like 100 shots to get the color of the stones just right!

Mothers-Day-Note-Cards
Happy Mother’s Day Note cards

I decided to create a little “Happy Mother’s Day” note card where I could write a little personal note to each Mom. On the other side I wrote a short description of the properties of Rose Quartz along with Care & Cleaning for the bracelet.

As I wrote out each card I looked up their names on IMDB and was surprised and tickled to know that a famous movie star might actually hold a piece of jewelry that I made. If I am lucky they might even contact me or look at other items I have available!

Have you re-charged your crystals?

Quartz crystal
Quartz Crystal in the Sun

Have you re-charged your crystals? I am absolutely no expert on Rock or Quartz Crystals, but let me tell you what I know from experience….

I had some Quartz Crystals that were lying around, uncared for and forgotten. I found them and cleaned them up with mild soap and water, bringing back the pure clear color. I know that crystal has energy and I wanted to revitalize them, not for any purpose really except just to honor them. I called a friend who knows more than I do about this subject and she suggested I put them in the sun for several hours and also over night during the last full moon.

After I did this with the crystals, I put them on my desk, and I just realized that I have had the most abundance of creativity EVER since I took some time to care for them and charge them up!! I am thanking the crystals for their help and energy!

My crystal stones are sunbathing today!

So I put them back in the sun today since they are probably drained from all the mental clarity they gave me! I also put the little Lapis Lazuli Pyramid with them for company, and a recharge too! If you have some crystals that are stored away, take them out and give them some love – they will return it to you with mental clarity, inspiration and energy!
