The secret to selling on Etsy using Etsy tags

Have you been selling on Etsy and wondered what the secret was to get more sales? I think a lot of people wonder about this and I wanted to share what I discovered about Etsy Tags and how to use them.

This method I use seems to have made a big difference on how often my items are found, viewed, favored and sold. More importantly my revenue increased significantly!!

If you are not currently selling on Etsy, then open an Etsy store and get started selling on Etsy with 40 free listings.

Which words to use selling on etsy
Ever wondered what the big secret is to getting views and sales? It’s the words you use, and Etsy Tags are a big part!

What are Etsy Tags?

Etsy tags are different terms used to describe and identify your item and make them relevant to a customer search.

You can use single words or common phrases to describe an item as long as they are relevant. Be sure to read the House Rules in the Seller Handbook to make sure you know the do’s and don’ts.

I read the directions and helpful tips from Etsy on how to use tags, but the light bulb went off for me when I saw what was coming up in my Top Keywords section under Etsy Stats.

Top Keywords

These are words and phrases that customers have searched for and successfully found your item.

I don’t remember specifically which keyword in the shop stats made the “light bulb go on” for me, but it was something generic like “crimp beads” or “horse clasp” and I suddenly REALIZED that I had everything tagged totally wrong!

I was using words in the tags that I thought people would search for, but not really checking to see what words customers were actually using in their search. It is amazing that they found anything at all since my terms were so generic!

Search Etsy Bar
Use the search Etsy bar at the top of each page to see how people search for items.

Search Etsy for keyword tags

It suddenly dawned on me that the terms that people are really searching for are provided in the drop down search (as shown above).

I began the arduous task of double checking all of the tags on my items and comparing them to terms found in the Etsy search drop down. I removed terms that didn’t show up and changed to words and phrases in the search drop down.

I also used these terms in the title of my item and in the first sentence of my descriptive copy. You can also use the Google Keyword tool on adwords to help you come up with phrases people use on the web.

After just a few days I had a huge increase in views, favorites and orders, which was phenomenal. My orders increased by 60%!!

You have to continually check and update these terms as customers change the way they search. This also keeps your listings “Fresh”.

Other factors when selling on Etsy

There are still other factors needed to be successful when you sell on Etsy, which includes:

  • A nice variety of items
  • Great photos
  • Good descriptions
  • Good customer service

What Happened to the Etsy Front Page?

I know I am not the only person selling on Etsy who wonders what happened to the Etsy Front Page, where is the featured Etsy Treasury and what is the incentive to continue making an Etsy Treasury?

I had lots of questions ❓ and not many answers, so did a little digging in the Etsy Forums and came up with some information to share for those of you who have questions too.

What Happened to the Etsy Front Page

The link above is a thread that has a lot of discussion in the Etsy Forums about the changes. I am just thankful that I still have my Etsy Shop banner and they haven’t done anymore messing around with individual Etsy Shop layouts.

New Etsy Front Page Feed

New and Improved Etsy Front Page

The new Etsy Front Page has a continuous feed of items that they think you might like, based on your favorite items and favorite sellers.

They mention that treasuries may surface on the front page, and I believe that means when you or your favorite sellers make or favorite a treasury, then it shows up as a small image along with the mix of other items.

They say it’s “A New More Democratic Homepage”.  😯 Really? What if I want a Republican or Independent homepage? That reference totally leaves a bad taste in my mouth! But I do see the logic of populating the front page with lots of items (similar to Pinterest) instead of the sixteen items it used to show.

Treasuries are a great marking tool, but now that they won’t be used on the Etsy Front page, I have questions to research for the future,

  1. Why spend an hour or two making a really cool treasury if it doesn’t have the chance to make the front page?
  2. Does that mean I can now make treasuries to market my own products?
  3. What about using more than one item from a shop?
Etsy-Front-Page-Treasury
A Crisp Morning Treasury. The one time that I had an item in an Etsy Front Page treasury.

Focusing on teams, friends and themes, the treasury acts like a digital advertising flyer that can be sent anywhere!

So I will continue to use them and appreciate the times I am included in another persons treasury. But gone are the days and the thrill of having your item seen in a treasury on the Etsy Front Page.

I would love to have feedback and comments on this topic!

Why I Create

Cool-Beads
Why I Create – because there are just so many cool beads!

A recent Etsy contest about “Why I Create” lead me to make this cool graphic, and it is the simple answer to why I am involved in the bead and jewelry making craft.

Knowing full well that my chances of winning were slim, I didn’t want this image to go to waste so decided to add it here on the blog, with a few words about the act of creating, and how it evolves.

Dictionary definition of create

cre·ate verb

  1. : to make or produce (something) : to cause (something new) to exist
  2. : to cause (a particular situation) to exist
  3. : to produce (something new, such as a work of art) by using your talents and imagination

My definition

Imagination: There are so many ways that this evolves, sometimes it is by seeing something visually that is appealing or stimulating, and sometimes images just appear in my mind. Many times I create just to get those images out of my head. Other times I believe that ingenuity plays a big part:

“I can imagine anything but what really cool stuff can I make with what I have???”

Plan & Organize: Recently I had to make a large amount of the same item and it took some planning to make sure I had enough of everything so that I wasn’t scrambling at the last-minute to find what I needed. I did the math and ordered more than I needed, then kept it all together until my start day so that I wasn’t running around the office muttering:

“Oh my God where did I put those beads?? I know they are around here somewhere!”

Produce: Actually do it. So many people get stuck here. I know a lot of people who imagine and dream of things, but they just never take that next step of actually doing it. It is kind of like a car that won’t quite start, and believe me I have days like that as well, but to keep that from happening too often I make a schedule and put it on the calendar.

The basic definition of “create” is to produce so when you think of it like that we ALL create something every single day, which leads me right back to the beginning question of “Why do I create?”:

“The answer is the same, because there are just so many cool beads!!

What and why do you create?

Ideas to increase website traffic when selling online

Being an entrepreneur can be a real challenge, coming up with ideas to increase website traffic when selling online is something to constantly think about.

Whether you have an Etsy Store, an Ebay Store or sell your cool handmade gifts at local craft fairs, getting shopper traffic to see your cool stuff is a dilemma.

Last year I made the above chart and shared it on my Facebook Fan page, I revisited the key points to see what might have changed, and wanted to share these results.

Building-Website
Lots of work on www.beadloverskorner.com

Increase website traffic by building your website

Over the past year I have learned a LOT about blogging, SEO and my Shopsite shopping cart.

I changed my hosting to a company that is a Shopsite expert and upgraded the software to the most current version. This fixed a lot of things that the original ad agency who set up my website did not do correctly, and also made it possible for a few other important things:

  • Mobile browsing with a simple mobile checkout
  • Move blog from Blogspot to Word Press and link to website
  • Insert products into Google Shopping

All of the above improvements have increased the orders on my website from like one or two a month to nearly one a day! I am slowly inserting more and more products, so I expect that number to increase over the next year!

Selling-At-Craft-Fairs
Selling My Cool Stuff outside in the hot sun, no thanks!

Set up at local craft fairs

My opinion hasn’t changed on this, no sense in using my energy to set up tables under the hot Central Florida sun or in a tent so that people can look at my beaded jewelry and say “Oh how pretty, I can make that!”

online-Stores

Put it on Ebay

I made all the changes Ebay wanted last year, and now again this year there are more changes, although not as drastic.

I have decided that the “Variations” option is only good if your product is selling, otherwise the item just sinks lower and lower in search.

I changed many of my titles for the Cassini search engine and I do think that helped somewhat. Even though I don’t spend much time working on the Bead Lovers Korner Ebay Store, Ebay has a lot of traffic and somehow I manage to have a good volume of sales.

List on Etsy

Not much has changed here, I keep a lot of popular items there as well as new handmade creations.

The great things about Etsy are the teams and the awesome tips and ideas they give to you to help you be successful, not to mention the fact that the fees are lower.

I get a fair amount of traffic to the Bead Lovers Korner Etsy Shop, and the sales are steady.

fb-logo

Facebook fan Page

I officially quit giving Facebook any advertising money at the end of last year. I did not see much of a return from the money I spent with them in recent years. I do keep my Bead Lovers Korner facebook page updated, but I am not wasting any more money on advertising there.

Even though I am no longer advertising for likes, etc. I still keep getting new fans, and it is weird because a lot of them are from foreign countries and I can’t even read their names!!

In closing, lots of work on updating and building my own website and blog has proven to be the most beneficial this past year.

Top 5 Selling Tips to Make Money Online

Top Selling tips take great pictures
Take great photos to represent your product

If you sell on eBay or are learning how to sell on Etsy, your own website or any other online selling sites, these selling tips will help you get started in your quest of making money online, or at least give you something to think about. I have been selling on the internet since 2001, and have found these 5 tips to be the most important.

1. Take Great Pictures

It isn’t hard to take great pictures, but like anything it does take some practice and a little bit of knowledge. You don’t have to be an expert at photography, and if you don’t have the money to hire someone to do it for you, it is absolutely possible for you to have high quality images of your products.

  • Use a good camera. The prices today are much less than they used to be, but it is worth the investment to get a good camera, for good close up shots get an optical zoom
  • Use a photo editing program like Photoshop or PicMonkey, or another photo editing program to help with color, contrast and cropping out things you don’t want in your images
  • Check out my blog post on “How to Take Pictures“, it is almost like a “Photography for Dummies” because I know nothing about photography and can still take great pictures

2. Sell Top Quality Products and Keep Them in Stock

A top quality product = happy customers!

I hadn’t been selling online too long when I received some merchandise I thought was a great deal, but it was cheap and low quality, and guess what? The customer thought so too… needless to say I never brought it in my store again

  • You get what you pay for. Cheap or low quality products will guarantee returns and customer complaints
  • Keep items in stock for fast shipping. I always keep what I sell so that I can control how fast it gets shipped, relying on a drop shipper is asking for trouble if you sell on eBay, or anywhere online where fast delivery is important
Selling tip offer variety of Price Points
Offer a variety of Price Points

3. Have a variety of price points

You have to keep a balance of low, medium and high prices so that there is something for everyone. I think there are still people who are leery of shopping online, and maybe even more so after the Target incident this last holiday season. Having all ranges of product pricing will accommodate the skeptical online shopper and the seasoned one.

  • Low, Medium and High Prices for different levels of customers
  • Competitive pricing You have to be somewhat in line with competition, so search out other sellers of your product and compare pricing frequently. Selling too cheap will hurt the value of your brand, and of course you can’t gouge customers either
  • Ability to offer sales  This is a no brainer. Everyone is looking for a deal, so you must have enough product and enough profit margin to offer sales and still make money.
Be-Everywhere
Be Everywhere, Be Social

4. Be Everywhere

Don’t rely on one selling site or your own website, people who surf and shop on the internet are diverse and you should be too. I personally sell on several sites as well as having my own website. Not all people like eBay, some have never heard of Etsy, and your private website may get lost on the internet the way changes occur all the time with search engines.

  • Be established on several online selling sites – eBay, Etsy, Zazzle, Amazon, Bonanza, your own website, etc. Yes, you will have fees, but each selling site has a different clientele and they also advertise for their site and you.
  • Social Media Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and others help you to find new customers and let them know about your business
  • Join groups This is a great way to network and also establish your online reputation. There are groups on facebook, Linkedin, and other online communities. Etsy has teams that are a great way to share knowledge and support each other through activities, treasuries and more.
Don't-Give-Up
Don’t Give Up!

5. Don’t Give Up

One of the top reasons people fail is because they just quit trying, so don’t give up. I know there are stories about how people became millionaires practically overnight by selling online, but those stories are rare. Most of us entrepreneurs get up every day and work tons of hours, then become successful over time. Being successful doesn’t always mean being rich.

  • Success shouldn’t be measured in dollar figures because there is so much more to life
  • If you give up, then you never know how far you might have made it.
  • Success is a journey to be enjoyed, it’s not about the money!

“There is no failure except in no longer trying” – Elbert Hubbard

“It’s always too soon to quit” – Norman Vincent Peale
